Centipede joke

September 29th, 2003

This guy was lonely and decided life would be more fun if he had a pet. So
he went to the pet store and told the owner that he wanted to buy an
unusual pet.

After some discussion, he finally bought a centipede (100-legged bug),
Which came in a little white box to use for his house. He took the box
back home, found a good location for the box, and decided he would start off by
taking his new pet to the bar to have a drink.

So he asked the centipede in the box, “Would you like to go to Frank’s
with me and have a beer?”

But there was no answer from his new pet.

This bothered him a bit, but he waited a few minutes and then asked him
again, “How about going to the bar and having a drink with me?”

But again, there was no answer from his new friend and pet. So he waited a
few minutes more, thinking about the situation.

He decided to ask him one more time, this time putting his face up against
the centipede’s house and shouting, “Hey, in there! Would you like to go to
Frank’s place and have a drink with me?”

YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE THIS!

A little voice came out of the box:

“I heard you the first time! I’m putting on my shoes!!!”

My cousin Georgia: Died 09/27/2003

Dino’s Tribute to her life.

My cousin Georgia (aka Gogoula) passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2003. She is the daughter of John and Kiki Filias.

About 11 days ago, she had an aneurysm in the back of her brain. This aneurysm hemorrhaged (from what I understand) and the back of her brain had a large amount of blood collected. The doctors were hoping this blood would get absorbed, naturally. It didn’t. She never got better. She leaves behind a loving husband, a 9 year old girl, Joanna, and a 14 year old boy, Bill.

Along with my entire family, I am very saddened by this. I used to have 13 cousins. Now I have 11. I’ve lost Gus and Gogoula.

I am so glad I had a chance to go to Greece a few times in recent years, as an adult. Having relatives so far away is a 50/50 situation. Half the time, it makes things much easier in terms of obligations, holidays, etc. But the other half of the time, it makes thing have this sort of “helpless” feeling/situation. I would want nothing more in the world than to be in Greece right now, about 8:30AM, as they prepare to get ready for her funeral.

Having this barrier (Atlantic Ocean) between us makes it kind of shitty. I had the opportunity to mourn her loss this morning with my family here, at Dino’s house. Gina is up North camping, with her friends, so she’ll have to mourn on her own when she gets back. Sorry, Gina.

Anyway, Gogoula was always so nice and hospitable to me, Michelle, and my friends. Every time we came to the bar they run in the Summer, we were treated like royalty. Carte blance treatment all the way. I remember the last time we were there, Michelle was out near the water, and I was hanging out in the small kitchen with her. She made me some munchies to eat. Some French Fries and some cheese. It was delicious while I sucked down a few beers in the middle of the day!

One of the most striking memories I had with her was when I went to Greece in 1988, alone, for two months. I think I spent the night at her place for one or two nights. We hung out all day and night. And the part I’ll never forget was that we rented a movie on VHS called The Day After. It was a movie that aired in the U.S. during the Cold War, when the entire planet was afraid of a globalthermonuclear war. It was a movie that was very shocking for the general public. It showed what it would be like, physically, mentally, and emotionally, if the United States was attacked by nuclear weapons. I had always wanted to see it at home, but I missed it. Gogoula was cool enough to have a VCR (pretty cool at the time in Agios Vasilios, Greece). I had a blast with her, those few days in the Summer of 1988.

I’ll miss you, cousin!

My External Womb Idea

September 26th, 2003

In talking with my account rep at the company I currently work for, I was reminded of a funny conversation we had. I was explaining to Kendall and Michelle (my reps) the idea I had for an external womb.

It’s like a fish tank that is filled with a gelatinous substance so that you can see the embryo form into a human being the whole time. The gel is transparent, and full of all the nutrients the child will need to grow.

You just add the “juice” as the weeks and months progress, not letting it affect your busy life. It’s the best of both worlds. You bring a baby into this world without the physical and emotional grief of carrying it to term. Imagine, the “mother” could go out after work, have a few cocktails with friends, and never have to worry about hurting the child. For our urban warriors, this is most ideal. Obviously, if you live in Hanging Dog, North Carolina (a real town), there’s not much to do, so hanging out with the baby, built-in, isn’t a bad idear. The sales down there wouldn’t be as high as they would be in a place like Detroit, Chicago, New York (which one of those three is NOT like the other?).

Broke my favorite web-based email client yesterday!

September 25th, 2003

I was trying to be slick and upgrade IMP yesterday, which is part of the Horde framework! What a dummy. I not only broke Horde and IMP, but I think I also messed up my PEAR installation. PEAR is a framework that lives within PHP on my server. Well, today, I’m going to try and fix everything. Can I do it? We’ll see. All this Linux stuff is a learning experience, day in and day out.

Thursday NBC Shows
The new Thursday NBC shows start tonight. Pretty excited about them all. Friends is always great, as is Will and Grace. There is also a new show called Coupling which has that hot blonde English lady from The Mind of a Married Man. Her name is Sonya something or other. She’s hot, and her accent is hotter! And last but not least, E.R. is always sensational!

We watched Solaris last night. Strange movie. And I think I fell asleep for about 5 critical minutes near the end of the movie. I have this affliction where if I’m 5% tired, I fall asleep when I’m watching movies… maybe it happens more during the slower ones, the ones that require more thought. Wears a guy out, I guess.

Great 6 miles on the treadmill
We had our last of our longer Wednesday runs last night. It started raining just as we were heading out the door, so we headed to the gym instead, which kind of sucked, as running 6 miles on a treadmill blows! Anyway, had a great run of 50:56!
